DO YOU LOVE HISTORY?
ENJOY SHARING IT WITH OTHERS?

Being a Docent at the Wrightsville Beach Museum is a wonderful opportunity for you! Whether you are a long-time resident of our area or a newcomer, you’ll find this an interesting and welcoming spot to learn and share our history.

We have two Museum buildings – both are old cottages that have been moved from Lumina Avenue to their current locations. A Docent serves at each cottage. The two cottages have quite different exhibits, but each reflects the history of Wrightsville Beach.

The Museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm and on Sundays 1 pm – 4 pm. The Docent shifts are 10 am-1 pm and 1 pm-4 pm. We need one Docent at each cottage during these times. Some of our Docents volunteer weekly, some bi-weekly, and some monthly. We work with your schedule!

The Docent’s primary “job” is to greet visitors, give them a brief tour of the museum, try to answer their questions, and make them feel welcome. Some of our visitors have never before visited Wrightsville Beach (or Wilmington). some have lived here for several years, and some grew up here many years ago. They all have one thing in common…interest in and curiosity about Wrightsville Beach and its history.

We have a training program that enables you to prepare at your own pace. Our Docent Manual contains information on the cottages and their history, our exhibits, and the history of our area. While studying the manual, new Docents also “shadow” current Docents.  They are then usually ready to invite a friend or family member to visit for a “practice tour” prior to giving tours to our visitors.

We hope you will contact us for more information about this interesting and rewarding opportunity!
