CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS – 2017

Free programs at the museum.

  • February 8, 3- 3:45PM, Valentines New and Old. Come to the museum and learn about the tradition of valentines. We will make new valentines and look at the pretty and sometimes funny old valentines. We will make ones made from wood and some with glitter and lace doilies. Snack will be a cookie to decorate!!   • March 15, 3- 3:45PM, Pirates – Shiver Me Timbers! Our very popular program with our costumed pirate is returning! We will learn about local pirates: where they lived and traveled and what they did. He will show you all about his clothing and teach you how to talk “pirate!” Light refreshments will be provided.   • April 19, 3- 3:45PM, Earth Day – Recycle and Plant some grass! Hear the story of the little goat who ate all the things we recycle! Learn all the different ways you can reuse what we usually throw away. Plant some grass to take home and make a fun snack. Free event. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.
  • May 17, 3- 3:45PM, Lifeguards! Bathing Suits! Safety! We will have a lifeguard come talk about her job and how we can be more safe at the beach. We will make an old-fashioned bathing suit and make a “sandy” snack! Free event. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.
  • June 21 at 10:30-11:15AM Shells! Our popular Shell program returns! We will learn about one of our favorite things at the beach, Shells! Explore their colors and shapes. Learn about the animals that once used these shells as their home. Find the many places we use shells in the museum in the I Spy activity. Light refreshments will be provided. We will have shells here, but feel free to bring your own shells to use for the craft activity. For elementary-school aged children. Free event. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.
  • July 19, 10:30-11:15AM Turtles – Sea Turtles and Land Turtles – The museum will have a volunteer from the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project teaching us about sea turtles and the difference between them and land turtles. She will describe the life-cycle of sea turtles and her experience walking the beach each week looking for new nests and “sitting” with the nests when the eggs are ready to hatch. We will read a book about sea turtles, do a craft, and have light refreshments. For elementary-school aged children. Free event at the museum. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.
  • August 16, 10:30AM. Hurricanes. The theme is Hurricanes: Extreme Weather. A local weatherman will come to talk about what a hurricane is and what happens when we get a hurricane warning and a hurricane watch. We will do weather-related activities and have light refreshments. Free event. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.  
  • September 20, 3- 3:45PM, Dogs: What You Need to Know About Dogs! Dogs are everywhere and we see them a lot at the beach and on The Loop. We will have a speaker with a dog to talk about safety around dogs and about their care. We will read Go Dogs Go and make paper cut-out dogs. Light refreshments will be provided.   • October 18, 3PM, Clang! Clang! Goes the Trolley! Learn about riding the trolley back in 1909 when the Myers Cottage was built. Dress up and learn the story of your character as you enact riding the trolley to the beach. What will you see on the ride? Who will you meet? Light refreshments will be provided.   • November 15, 3- 3:45PM. Thanksgiving Feast! Join us as we explore Thanksgiving dinner traditions. What do you know about turkeys? Can you set a proper table? Participate in Thanksgiving inspired art activities. The book, ‘Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving will be read and light refreshments will be provided. For elementary-school aged children.   • December 13, 3- 3:45PM. Not a Creature was Stirring…Elaine Henson, a local educator and historian, will read from one of her vintage editions of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. We will make Christmas tree ornaments out of shells and decorate cookies in Christmas colors and designs. For elementary-school aged children. Free event. Space is limited. Call 256-2569 to register.
